Seller Story | An Inherited Home and a Move
The House Needed Work. The Sellers Also Needed Time.
For one family we worked with, inheriting a house meant taking on more than another property. The kitchen and bathrooms needed updating, the exterior needed attention, and an older addition needed further evaluation.
The sellers were also planning a move. Getting the house ready for a traditional sale would have meant managing substantial work at the same time they were trying to organize what came next.
We helped them complete the sale without renovating first. Just as importantly, the transaction plan gave them time after closing before possession changed hands.
An As-Is Purchase
The sellers did not have to update the kitchen and bathrooms or renovate the home before completing the sale.
Time After Closing
The plan allowed time between closing and the change of possession, so the sale and the move did not have to happen at the same moment.
Why Updating an Inherited Home Can Become a Major Project
Kitchen and bathroom work can quickly turn a preparation plan into a substantial investment. In its 2026 Colorado remodeling guide, Alpine Contracting gives planning ranges of $40,000 to $85,000 for a mid-range kitchen and $18,000 to $35,000 for a standard secondary bathroom.
The contractor also describes six to ten weeks of construction for a typical mid-range kitchen. These are that company’s regional planning figures, not statewide averages or an estimate for this family’s home.
This property also needed exterior attention and further evaluation of an older addition. Selling without renovating first let the family move forward without organizing those projects alongside their move.
We Worked Around the Property They Had
This was not a house with just one small update on the list. There were projects inside and outside, plus questions about the older addition. The family would have had a substantial amount to organize if they chose to renovate before selling.
Our purchase gave them another route. They could complete the sale with the house in its existing condition and keep their attention on the move.
For more background on that decision, see our guide to selling an inherited house in Colorado.
The Practical Details Mattered
Our team stayed in touch about the final furniture move and the key handoff. Those details were part of helping the sellers work through leaving the home.
Closing Was One Step. Leaving the Home Was Another.
A sale can be ready to close before a family is ready to hand over every key. For these sellers, allowing time after closing was part of making the transaction workable.
We stayed in contact about the practical pieces of the transition instead of treating the closing date as the only date that mattered.
The arrangement described here was part of this particular purchase. If you need time between closing and moving, bring that up early so we can discuss what could work for your sale.
